Heron's Nest Sanctuary™

Quiet Coastal Retreat on Prince Edward Island

A day in PEI's Évangéline Region

Editorial date:

If you are looking for things to do in PEI's Évangéline Region, Mont Carmel is a good place to start. The area is part of the North Cape Coastal Drive and is known for its Acadian communities. You can spend the day with local history, glass art, music and the coast without trying to see the whole Island at once.

Heron's Nest Sanctuary is a one-room bed and breakfast in Mont Carmel. If you are staying with Brian and Beverly Cooper, breakfast is included from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You can walk through their gardens before heading out, or save that for when you return.

Start with Mont Carmel

The Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church was completed in 1898 beside the Northumberland Strait. It remains an important place for local Acadian families. Tourism PEI includes it in its Évangéline Region itinerary, alongside the Bottle Houses in Cap-Egmont. Check whether the building is open before planning to go inside.

At Heron's Nest in Mont Carmel, Brian and Beverly have spent seven and a half years shaping the grounds into twenty gardens. The property is a Great Blue Heron nesting area, and guests can explore the gardens at their own pace. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, so give any birds you see plenty of room.

Visit the Bottle Houses in Cap-Egmont

The Bottle Houses are life-size buildings made with 25,000 recycled glass bottles. There are gardens and glass art to see there as well.

Because the Bottle Houses operate seasonally, check their current dates and hours before you set out. That is especially useful if you are visiting PEI outside the main summer season.

Look for music and food in Abram-Village

Village Musical Acadien brings together Acadian music, food and handcrafts in Abram-Village during its operating season. The programme can include concerts and dinner theatre, so it is worth checking what is actually scheduled for the day you plan to visit.

A performance gives you a fixed time to plan around. If one interests you, check the schedule first, then choose your other stops around it.

Add the Acadian Museum if you want more history

For a deeper introduction to Island Acadian history, the Acadian Museum in Miscouche has exhibits following Acadian life on PEI from 1720 to the present. The museum works as a stop on your way west or as a separate outing if you would rather spend more time in Mont Carmel and Cap-Egmont.

Tourism PEI's North Cape Coastal Drive guide has more ideas if you want to keep driving. Check current hours for museums, attractions and performances before you set out.

Back in Mont Carmel, Heron's Nest gives you a private guest room in Brian and Beverly's home, breakfast included, and gardens to enjoy between outings. The Stay page has the room details and the link to check availability on Airbnb.
